Keyboard Information

What are the different Keyboard form factors?

A mechanical keyboard's form factor refers to the physical layout and size of the keyboard. There are several standard form factors available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here's a quick rundown of the most popular ones:

  • Full-sized (100%): This is the classic keyboard layout that includes all the standard keys, including a function row, a number pad, and arrow keys. Full-sized keyboards are ideal for users who need all the functionality of a traditional keyboard, such as data entry or gaming. However, they can take up a significant amount of desk space.
  • Tenkeyless (TKL) (80%): Tenkeyless keyboards are a good compromise between full-sized and compact keyboards. They eliminate the number pad while keeping all the other essential keys. This makes them more compact than full-sized keyboards but still provides all the functionality most users need. Tenkeyless keyboards are a popular choice for gamers and programmers who want to save desk space.
  • 65%: These keyboards are even more compact than Tenkeyless keyboards, typically removing the function row keys and arrow keys. Some 65% keyboards may also remove some other keys, such as the Insert, Delete, and Page Up/Down keys. They are a good option for users who are limited on desk space or who prefer a minimalist setup. However, the lack of certain keys can make them less functional for some users.
  • 60%: The most compact option, 60% keyboards only include the essential keys for typing. They eliminate the function row, number pad, arrow keys, and some other keys. These keyboards are very portable and can be a good option for gamers who need maximum desk space for mouse movement. However, they require the use of function layers to access many commonly used keys, which can be inconvenient for some users.

Ultimately, the best form factor for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Consider how much desk space you have available, what types of tasks you will be using the keyboard for, and how important portability is to you.

what are the different types of mechanical switches?

The world of mechanical keyboards can be overwhelming, but understanding the three main types of switches is a great first step! These categories focus on the feeling (and sound) you get when pressing a key.

  1. Linear switches: These are the smoothest operators. Pressing a key down feels consistent with no bump or click. They're popular for gamers who prefer a quick, uninterrupted keystroke. Think of it like smoothly gliding down a ramp. Speed Silver switches are a great example.
  2. Tactile switches: These guys offer a little "bump" when you press the key down, letting you know you've reached the actuation point (the point where the key registers). They're quieter than clicky switches but provide satisfying feedback for typists. Cherry or Gateron Browns are the most common.
  3. Clicky switches: The loudest and most distinct of the bunch. Clicky switches make a clicky sound (surprise!) when pressed, along with a tactile bump. They provide clear feedback for both typing and pressing buttons in games. Think of it like a tiny clicker going off with every keystroke. Cherry or Gateron Blues are the most widely used.

While these are the main categories, there's a lot of variety within them! Switch manufacturers offer different weights (how much force it takes to press the key) and even combine elements of these types. But with this foundation, you're well on your way to finding the perfect mechanical keyboard switch for you.
